2:28 αυτω, what is its antecedent?
[WH text]
I am wondering what options exist for the antecedent of αυτω in verse 28.
Would the possibilities include πατρος of vs 28 or και ο νικων και ο τηρων of vs 26?

Re: Rev 2:28 antecedent
I think the antecedent is ὁ νικῶν καὶ ὁ τηρῶν ἄχρι τέλους τὰ ἔργα μου. Let me indent this text ...
Code: Select all
ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ διηποροῦντο, ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες, τί θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι;

Re: Rev 2:28 antecedent
In addition to Jonathan's helpful indenting, one has to ask the question "what would it mean if πατρός were the antecedent?" Why would the Son give to the Father authority over the nations? It would also be syntactically unusual (but not impossible) to have a proleptic pronoun so far removed from its antecedent.Alan Patterson wrote:2:28 αυτω, what is its antecedent?

Since he's talking about v.28, I think taking πατρός as the antecedent of αὐτῷ in that verse would mean that the Son will give the Father the morning star.Barry Hofstetter wrote:In addition to Jonathan's helpful indenting, one has to ask the question "what would it mean if πατρός were the antecedent?"
