Moving back to the notebook again now - Because the system requirements for latest release of Ubuntu have taken a stride past the specifications that my machine is rated at, I'm planning to go to Lubuntu.
To achieve that, do I need to scrub and rebuild, or is there another way that one goes about a version change in a Linux system?

This may be getting a bit past b-greek's core topics, but...
It is possible to transition Linux systems from one desktop environment to another without a re-install. However, it may not always be supported by your typical distribution. IIRC, Ubuntu has the ability to install LXDE (the desktop environment of Lubuntu) alongside the deafult Unity, and to choose between them during login time (there should be some widget on the logon screen to choose desktop environment). If you leave both, it may get confusing because there will be duplication of certain applications (file browser, terminal, etc.).

And if you use a lighter weight desktop, the system requirements may not be that different from Lubuntu. Another possibility to consider is Ubuntu MATE or just installing MATE as your desktop.
