Teaching participles outside of a Greek course

Post by Ken Litwak »

I'm teaching an exegesis course online in the Summer at the M.Div. level. I was told that the students will have had one semester of Greek, and will know the finite verb in all tenses, but that I will have to teach them participles! It's not a course on Greek and I don't plan to devote a course lecture to this, so I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for a readily-accessible, helpful resource for teaching the students, without much assistance, about participles. I'm not sure how much I'll benefit students with one semester of Greek by talking to them about participles in the context of exegeting Hebrews, but I am prepared to give it my best shot. If only it could be something easy, like the optative, instead of one of the hardest topics. Thanks.

I thought the treatment of participles in Funk's grammar was very straightforward, with a nice systematic treatment and useful examples.

Dear Ken
I've a chapter on participles as a .pdf file at
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... iciple.pdf

which they could download and read for themselves
Also further .pdf files at
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... d-pass.pdf
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... ple-wn.pdf
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... weirdo.pdf
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... aorist.pdf
and the Genitive Absolute at
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... ve-abs.pdf

http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook ... -verbs.pdf
contains a section on participles of the -mi verbs
or they can all be accessed from
http://www.drshirley.org/greek/textbook/contents.html

I've yet to write chapters on the Passive Participles and the Perfect, but the current chapters might be enough to get them started.
Good Luck :-)

Sorry all. I thought I had replied to your much-appreciated assistance. So better late than never, thanks for the help, especially the book chapter.

I'm still not sure how teaching students about participles is going to have an immediate payoff, but thanks much for this assistance.
