LXX vs Greek OT

Post by Alan Patterson »

I am reading a book that regularly refers to different texts that Paul was likely quoting from within Romans. He mentions the LXX (which he says is a family of 100s of mss, not a specific text) distinct from the Greek OT. What is the difference between these two texts?

Commonly, the two are used synonymously. If a distinction is to be made, the author should define his or her terms clearly. I take it he does not do so? What is the book?

Dr. Penner,

The book is a commentary on the book of Romans by Zane C. Hodges, Romans Deliverance from Wrath. He often refers to the MT, LXX, and the OT Greek text that Paul is using. He also says that the Greek OT text differs from our LXX text today. At times he implies that this is Paul's personal translation from the Hebrew to a Greek OT. He apparently sees differences at times between Paul's quotations from this Greek OT and the LXX.

I wonder if by "Septuagint" he means one of the printed editions we use today (such as that of Rahlfs), and that by "Greek Old Testament" he means the various Greek manuscripts of the Bible available to Paul. Or is it the other way around?
