Clean Jordan Lake is planning a public trash cleanup day to clean up trash along the lake’s shoreline as part of N.C. Big Sweep activities taking place across the state on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Last year approximately 200 volunteers removed 600 tires and 700 bags of trash from the shores. This year’s volunteers will work their way further south along the shoreline that forms one side of the Haw River arm that traps storm-water driven trash.
The Crosswinds Marina and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Jordan Dam will donate their time to ferry volunteers to and from the sites.
The Chatham County Solid Waste and Recycling Division will dispose of the trash. N.C. Big Sweep and the N.C. Department of Transportation will provide bags and gloves.
All details about the effort, including volunteer sign-up, are available at meetup.com/helpcleanjordanlake/.

Thanks for coverage of our 3rd annual public trash cleanup of Jordan Lake’s shoreline that was held on Sat., Oct 1. You article was based on a press release issued by Chatham County that I prepared. Unfortunately, your staff incorrectly wrote that Cross Winds Marina donated their time to ferry volunteers during the Oct. 1 event. Instead, Cross Winds Marina was very kind to contribute four pontoon boats with operators to assist us with the GlaxoSmithKline service day on Wed., Sept. 28th. We also hosted a Biogen Idec service day on Fri., Sept. 30th. For the Oct. 1 event, about 20 private boats were volunteered along with two from Army Corps of Engineers ferried workers to cleanup sites. I am pleased to report that a total of 260 volunteers participated in these events. They removed 750 bags of trash (weighing about 7 tons!) and about 350 tires from the shoreline. Since its formation in July 2009, Clean Jordan Lake has attracted nearly 1,000 volunteers who have removed about 3,000 bags of trash (about 30 tons) and 1,700 tires! Unfortunately, the job is still not done.
