This week should have been a celebration of Carolina football and how far it has come entering Butch Davis’ fourth season as head coach.
Instead, it is a season of uncertainty, a time when the program and the school are teetering on the brink of one of the worst scandals in school history.

Cardinal Gibbons 40 – East Chapel Hill 28
East Chapel Hill’s Wildcats (1-1) seemed to fall back into their old habits for most of Friday’s game. The score read 40-7 with five minutes left in the third quarter, before an impressive Wildcat offensive spurt leveled things somewhat. Drew Davis found receivers Merritt Smith, Quadry Ridley and Ellis Jeffay for TD passes in the…

That ‘family atmosphere’
In the last 15 to 20 years, it has become chic among athletes to say they picked a college because of the family atmosphere within a particular program.
But just when you figure the phrase “family atmosphere†belongs in the same category as “character players,†along comes a kid who knows the difference between family and a collection of people.

Greetings, sports fans
In my position with The Carrboro Citizen, I will try to bring you unique views of UNC sports and the people who coach and play them. The ordinary story of who won and who lost doesn’t excite me as much these days. The personalities of the players and coaches and the heroics they manage to perform before full stadiums and arenas are far more fascinating, to me anyway. — Eddy Landreth

Frank Heath It’s been three and a half decades since the North Carolina Tar Heels were regular guests at the post-season National Invitational Tournament, where they played three times during a four-year span between 1971 and 1974, and Carolina fans hope it will be even longer before the Tar Heels have such frequent visits to…
Hoops fans come to terms with disappointing season
Beth Mechum Staff Writer “Three more wins until UNC has 2,000,†Woody Durham exclaimed at the Celebration of a Century Alumni Game last Friday night at the Smith Center. Add in that win against N.C. State Saturday night, and now it’s two. That sounds impressive – and Woody certainly said it in a way that…

Frank Heath It’s a wrap. The 2009-10 UNC men’s basketball team’s long journey into mediocrity and futility was cemented during the latter stages of the first half of Carolina’s 78-61 loss to Georgia Tech Tuesday night.
Three years in, Carrboro High hits a winning stride
