Gimme Five! Russell Baggett of Some Army

The way Russell Baggett tells it, Some Army was an accident– a few friends decided to record together on a whim and a band was born. The group formed in early 2011, released a 7″ to warm welcome in early 2012 and now has the triangle waiting impatiently for more of their psych-americana to be released.

This Army of local music vets is sure to have a few tricks up their uniform sleaves, but can their fearless leader handle our five question assault? See for yourself after the jump.

1. If your band were a peaceful movement, which would it be?

Elysse: Love Movement
Patrick: Green Movement
Joe: Obscure German Movement
Cameron & Rusty: Bowel Movement?
Russell: I don’t really understand this question.

2. When did you decide it was time to share this music?
I recorded a lot of demos for what I thought would be a quick follow up to the last Honored Guests record, but we were having a hard time getting all of the band together at the same time. I started thinking I would try to make something to release under a different name and asked some different people to play parts, and the band just sort of came together really casually over the course of a few weeks, maybe a month. We booked a show and everyone learned the songs really quickly. It wasn’t a big decision or anything, I think we were all itching to do something new.

3. Describe the first song you ever wrote.
Cringe-worthy. I was really into Uncle Tupelo and the early Wilco/Son Volt stuff late in high school. I was probably trying to to rip them off, but failed miserably.

4. Who/what might be a few inspirations or influences that would really surprise people?
I don’t know, probably all of the pop music I grew up with. I really liked “oldies” when I was a kid, but I also had Whitney Houston cassettes, and was really into Mary J. Blige in 6th grade. I pretty much got into all of the grunge bands after that, but some of that R&B pop stuff probably sneaks into songs sometimes. I’m sure nobody notices.

5. What did you dream of being when you were a kid? (How ’d that turn out?)
Obviously, I wanted to be Maverick from Top Gun. Turns out I’m just a dude who plays music with his friends sometimes and works at a non-profit. Could be worse.

March down the steps to The Cave this Saturday, 3/31 to hear Some Army live. And, by all means, give Russell a high five when you see him!

One reply on “Gimme Five! Russell Baggett of Some Army”

[…] Servant Tires by Some Army – As a sextet of musicians from the Chapel Hill area, Some Army wasn’t planned from the beginning to be a band. Rather, the effort was originally merely a group of friends who decided to record music together. And sometimes that’s all it takes to make the world just a little bit better. Of course, the truth was revealed by band frontman Russell Baggett to Ashley Melzer for the Carrboro Citizen – […]
