Food

July is, without a doubt, the best time of the year around here for eating. Cooking at home, shopping at the market, dining out – doesn’t matter which is your preferred method of eating – July rules.

Over at our regularly awesome farmers’ market, the selection gets even more awesome come July, and the bounty is so plentiful that even those of us who like to spend a little of our Saturday mornings sleeping in can partake in the fine produce and other selections offered. As someone whose gastronomical life sometimes revolves around tomatoes, one of my favorite things about our market is the fabulous selection of tomatoes come summertime. Those who share my passion for this incredible delicacy should check out the annual Carrboro Farmers’ Market Tomato Day celebration on July 14. Get there early – it’s worth it.

With local produce so bountiful, it’s only natural that our talented local chefs take advantage of the selection on their menus and in special offerings. One thing I’ve learned over the past few years is that if Andrea Reusing has a tomato salad on Lantern’s specials menu (yes, I am talking tomatoes again), order it. Trust. The same can be said for almost anything on a local restaurant’s specials menu starting with the words “Farmers’ Market” or “local” and followed by some awesome fruit or veggie that thrives in the Carolina summer.

Better start putting in some extra hours on the treadmill – there’s eating to be done.
