Advance Notice: The Week in Concerts 11/30-12/6

Things to do (just in case anytime over the next couple of days, you forget how awesome it is to live here).

Mon – 11/30

  • The Dave Rawlings Machine / Charles Pettee @ Cat’s Cradle –If any part of you values truth and beauty and tradition and hope and history, you will make your way to the Cradle to see Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch—two sorcerers, if there have ever been.  Their originals are magnetic; their covers are transcendental; their partnership is something holy. I doubt I could more emphatically or more sincerely recommend a show. GO. $20

Tues – 12/1

  • Jay Reatard / Americans in France / Western Civ @ Local 506 $10 adv / $12 day of the show

Wed – 12/2

  • Real Estate / It is Rain in My Face @ Local 506 – Buzz, buzz, buzz says Real Estate is on the rise. Catch them while the location is right and the price is a low $8.

  • John Harrison (of North Elementary) / Brittain Ashford / Billy Sugarfix (mastermind behind The Sugarfix Mix and member of Evil Weiner) @ The Cave – Who needs my words when Harrison has dreamed up his own commercial for this wonderful triple bill? Spy the video now; show up at the show Thursday.

Sat – 12/5

  • Land of Talk / Old Bricks @ Local 506Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, just go jam it out to this band of garage rocking Canadians.  I’m a lazy pitchman, but this song suffices to explain why they’re a must listen. $8 adv / $10 day of the show
  • David Allan Coe / Rebel Son @ Lincoln Theatre $20 adv / $25 day of the show

Sun – 12/6

Advance Notice: The Week in Concerts 11/23-29

Reasons to get out of your house and into the mix.

Mon – 11/23

  • Flicker: Attack of the 50 ft. Reels Film Fest @ Cat’s Cradle – Come on down to the Cradle Monday night to lay your eyes on some homespun celluloid brought to you from filmmakers around the triangle. The only requirements for submission are that the films originate on film (super 8, 16, or 35 mm) and they must be less then 15 minutes long; the only requirements for entry, open eyes and $3.
  • Free Energy / Mount Weather @ Local 506 – With a debut record expected in the new year (produced by no less than LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy), there’s nothing but crazy buzz around the blog-o-sphere about this band of boys from Philadelphia. For $8 adv / $10 day of the show, you best go ahead and catch them before they end up on Gossip Girl or something stupid and you feel totes behind the times.

Tues – 11/24

  • One Love Festival: Capelton / Anthony B / Cocoa T with Steve Martinez & The Give Thanks Band @ Lincoln Theatre $27 adv / $32 day of the show

Wed – 11/25

  • Butterflies / Ah Holly Family (Portland) / Ohioan (members of Castanets/ Ghost to Falco) @ The Nightlight

Thurs – 11/26

  • 30th Annual Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner and Open Mic @ The Cave – For thirty years, The Cave’s “been celebrating Thanksgiving with a big honkin’ potluck.”  If the camaraderie and the chance to snack on someone’s grandma’s pattented pecan pie weren’t enough, there’s the promise of open mic shenanigans to boot.  Get grateful and bring something good to share.

Fri – 11/27

  • Post Turkey Day Jam: Katherine Whalen’s Lucky / Old Habits / Jon Shain, Will McFarlane, Danny Gotham, and Armand Lenchek @ Cat’s Cradle – Proceeds benefit Inter Faith Council for Social Service $10
  • 919 Noise Showcase: Joe Hendrix / Remora / Jon Ericksen / Sten Ove Toft (Norway) / Slicnaton (Raleigh) / Nik Woondt (Chapel Hill) /POWER CLOUD (Chatham County Circuit Benders) @ The Nightlight

Sat – 11/28

  • Thad Cockrell / Civil Wars @ The Pour House Music Hall –  If you’re human and you’ve heard any note of Begonias, the duet album Cockrell made with Raleigh-darling Caitlin Cary, you know a- that record could probably stop the apocalypse, it’s so awesome and b- how incredi-mazing the double wallop of Cockrell’s tenor voice and sweet natured lyrical bent is.  I mean really, you’ll mostly be over your food-coma by then, so it would be a shame not to cough up the $10 and catch the man in action.

Anywhere else we need to be?

Happy Thanksgiving week!

Advance Notice: The Week in Concerts 11/16-22

Here because you can’t be trusted to know where to hear the good stuff on every night of the week.

Mon – 11/16

  • The XX / John Hopkins / The Dig @ Local 506 – The xx is a modern R&B inspired indie trio of 20-somethings from South London who sound like some blues-ed out Interpol, slowed down Massive Attack, grooved in Hot Chip mash-up (hear: “Crystalised”)…maybe.  It’s hard to put a finger on, but you can put an ear to it for $8 adv / $10 day of the show.

Tues – 11/17

  • D. Charles Speer & The Helix / Dan Melchior und Das Menace / Hiss Golden Messenger @ The Nightlight – The venerable MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger swears, “the Helix’s Hawkwinded honky tonk and wet Gary Stewart versioning is not to be missed.”  Having known Taylor (and his spacey tunes) for a couple years now I’d say his recommendation is a sure bet.  Just $6 to test the waters.

Wed – 11/18

  • Robert Earl Keane / Sons of Bill @ Lincoln Theatre $22 adv / $25 day of the show
  • Triangle Sound Painting Orchestra / Jim Kellough’s Spectacle ‘Locomotive with 6 Wheels of Steel” @ The Pinhook – Get ready for a Triangle Soundpainting Orchestra fundraiser with a theme show called: “TOTEM AIRLINES FLIGHT 779 – IT’S GONNA BE A BUMPY RIDE.”  It’s bound to be a bumpy (and wildly entertaining) ride.

Fri – 11/20

Fri – 11/20-22

Sat – 11/21

  • Killer Filler / The Soulless Dogs / X-Rayons @ The Cave

Sun – 11/22

Advance Notice: The Week in Concerts 11/9-15

Consider me your new social secretary, here to sift through the week in music so you don’t have to, providing pithy commentary where absolutely necessary and rants/raves wherever else.

Mon – 11/9

  • Alela Diane / Marissa Nadler @ The ArtsCenter in Carrboro – Alela Diane’s music may be California neu-folk, but it’s inspired by the oldest ilk of balladic warbling and amorous waltzing.  The songs are not sickly sweet, so much as old, weary, idyllic.  Her dulcet tones and gentle fingerpicking will make you want to run through fields, start muttering stanzas about “brambles” and fall in love just so you can break it off and go weep on some mountainside (or maybe that’s just me). These and other visions just $10 and as a bonus the lovely Marissa Nadler opens.
  • The Blakes / The Jackets @ Local 506 – Given The Blakes mix of Strokes-esque pop hooks with rattling garage rock, it’s a pity this brother duo hasn’t had more traction.  Their self-titled debut has been in my regular rotation off and on for two years, thanks to bouncy rockers like “Don’t Bother Me” and “Two Times.” Cough up the $8, it’s bound to be a good time.
  • Blind Pilot  / The Low Anthem @ Cat’s Cradle – I confess I don’t really care about Blind Pilot, but I do love (love.) The Low Anthem.  These kids went from recycle crew to wildly popular featured artists at the Newport Folk Fest all in one year thanks to the strength of 2008’s Oh My God, Charlie Darwin.  Buy it, or at least download “Charlie Darwin.” Seriously, oh my god, $10 adv / $12 day of the show.

Monday is hard.

Wed – 11/11

  • Jackson Browne @ DPAC – Hey look, it’s Jackson Browne, oh yeah and it’s $30, $40, or $55.
  • Chris Knight @ Lincoln Theatre – Little known, but much respected Kentucky songwriter flaunts his roots for $14 adv / $17 day of the show.

Thurs – 11/12

  • Lake Inferior / Honored Guests / Gift Horse @ Local 506 – Release show for a new 10″ from Lake Inferior. Get into the show and pick up a copy, all for $7.

Fri – 11/13

  • Alejandro Escovedo / Lambchop @ Reynolds Theatre $28, $22, $5 for Duke Students
  • Eileen Jewell / Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles @ Berkeley Café $10 adv / $12 day of the show
  • Minus the Bear / The Temper Trap / Twin Tigers @ Cat’s Cradle $18 adv / $20 day of the show
  • The Travelin’ McCoury’s @ Pine Cone $21-$23 Pine Cone members; $23-$25 general public

Fri/Sat – 11/13-14

  • The 5th Annual Black Beard’s Lost Weekend @ The Cave $7 each night – Purportedly, “a filthy, primal garage rock festival of the lowest and most repugnant order,” this thrashing in Chapel Hill’s oldest tavern features (if their names are to be believed) a riotous lineup.   Friday night, Pinche Gringo and the Lonesome Chihuahuas, Satan’s Youth Ministers, The Humms, and Trashcans take the cave.  Thursday, Dirty Little Heaters, The Electric Cycles, Nervous Habits, Rough Hands, and Thee Crucials, round out the calamity.  I can’t vouch to the quality of any of these bands, but I doubt they’d want me to.  Just $7 each night to lose your weekend.

Sat – 11/14

  • Dan Auerbach / Jessica Lee Mayfield / Justin Townes Earl @ Cat’s Cradle – Taking a step out from under The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach comes to lambaste the Cradle with his own brand of dirty spook rock.  For his gritty grooves, you’ll have the pleasure of waiting through honky-tonk charmer Justin Townes Earl and indie folk maiden Jessica Lee Mayfield.  It’s not a bad package deal for $20.
  • Fin Fang Foom / Ben Davis and the Jetts / Maple Stave @  Local 506 – Scrappy, locals Fin Fang Foom and Ben Davies and the Jetts, are throwing a joint release party, probably so they can fight over who has the more bad ass new record.  We’re in for that kind of duel. $Free. Need I say more?

Sun – 11/15

  • Langhorne Slim / Dawes @ Cat’s Cradle – Should you find yourself restless Sunday evening, there’s hardly a better place to wander than in earshot of  Langhorne Slim.   Although, a friend tells me his new record, Be Set Free, amounts to a disappointingly overwrought polishing and repackaging of his old shtick, that old shtick is pretty fertile ground.   Whatever qualms the new record may or may not warrant, it’s doubtful the live show has lost the rambunctious spirit that gave Slim and his cohort street cred in the first place.  Catch them setting ’em up and knocking ’em down again for just $13 adv / $15 day of the show.
  • Joshua Radin / The Watson Twins / The Kins @ Lincoln Theatre – Australian pretty boy brothers, then creepy close (aka twin) harmonies, and then probably a lot of crying. I mean that in the nicest way possible.  $16 adv / $18 day of the show
  • Hallelujah the Hills / Anders Parker @ Local 506 $8
