Coal Valley Paddle Tour

Join the Triangle Land Conservancy for a paddle tour of Coal Valley. Rain or shine (anything but lightning), tour the Deep River and learn about the industrial history of Pittsboro. The water tour will go from the Deep River Park to 15-501 with a lunch break and a visit to historic Endor Iron Furnace, a mid-1800s Confederate forge.

Documentary writing with Duncan Murrell, others

The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke presents a conversation about documentary writing, including what defines the genre, where it’s practiced, and why it makes a lasting impact. Two accomplished long-form writers are featured: Roger Hodge, editor of Harper’s Magazine, and Pittsboro journalist and author Duncan Murrell. Wednesday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Center for Documentary Studies. FREE.

Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball

The 2nd Annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball is happening on Saturday, Feb. 28 at historic Chatham Mills (480 Hillsboro St.) in downtown Pittsboro. There will be Cajun food, Zydeco dance brought to you by the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, blues and funk by Howie DeWitt and many other spectacles. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door and are available at www.chathamarts.org until 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and goes until midnight.

CLASS: Writing publishable poetry

Poets of all experience levels are invited to enroll in this class led by Judy Hogan, founding editor of Carolina Wren Press and 2008 winner of the Indy Arts Award. Chatham Arts’ 100 Mile Film Series presents new film

“Brushes with Life” by local filmmaker Philip Brubaker will be shown at The Fearrington Barn on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
The Sustainable Cinema Series features documentaries and independent films involving producers, directors, subjects and locations within 100 miles of Pittsboro in an effort to recognize local artists.
“Brushes with Life” features eight artists with illness, transcending stigma and demanding recognition in a world that often rejects them.
