Here are some books that I highly recommend:
Screenwriting from the Soul: Letters to an Aspiring Screenwriter
by
Richard Krevolin. An astounding accomplishment! Here is a "how to" book
that reads like a novel. Full of wit and wisdom. A must addition to your
bookshelf.
Adventures in the Screen Trade: A Personal View of Hollywood and
Screenwriting by William Goldman. Behind the scenes
"Reality 101" stories that every beginning screenwriter needs to know
about.
Book also contains the script to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid and a wonderful exercise in which Goldman develops a script from a
short story (both included in the text).
The Screenwriting Life: The Dream, the Job and the Reality by Rich
Whiteside. Interviews with industry professionals that are much more than
sound bites. Covers all aspect of film and television, giving the
beginner a great introduction to how Hollywood really works.
Writer's Guide to Hollywood Producers, Directors and Screenwriter's
Agents by Skip Press. A resource that belongs on every screenwriter's
shelf. Packed with inside information and marketing wisdom.
You'll also want the current Hollywood Creative Directory, or even better the online version, which is the most complete resource listing of producers and production companies (or, in another volume, agents and managers, etc.).
