Scouting reports

Scout: JazzyJ

McKie may be the perfect case of a player who is a superstar in college, but may not be able to make the transition to the pros. A lot of it, of course, is based on his size alone. A natural shooting guard, but will be forced to play point guard in the pros. Isn't totally unfamiliar with the position as he was forced to play it a lot his senior year, but it certainly isn't his best spot, as he almost averaged as many turnovers as assists his 4 years in school. At shooting guard, however, he is a very talented player. Decent shot from the outside, but has the great ability to take the ball to the hoop and draw fouls. Made a living on the line, in fact, scoring more free throws during his career than field goals. Looked especially good when his teammates were better, but struggled somewhat during USC's meltdown last year. You have to wonder though, as sometimes it's the true greats that make teams great, and that certainly isn't what happened with BJ and the Gamecocks.

In terms of comparisons, the first guy I think of that McKie reminds me of is Travis Mays, especially in terms of size and type of overall game. McKie is less of a black hole, of course, but their numbers are quite similar, especially if you take into account Mays' playing in the frenzy known as the Penders offense. Mays was a 1st round pick when he left college; unfortunately NBA teams have learned about undersized shooting guards since then and McKie looks more and more like a 2nd round pick, as I don't think scouts are sold on him playing PG on a full-time basis. As is the case with other undersized guards in recent years (i.e. Shawn Respert, Tony Delk, Ed Gray), the best case for McKie would be as a 3rd guard type, or alongside a tall point guard.
