Scouting Reports

Jones was the player of the year in the Pacific Coast Conference playing for the University of San Francisco.  I have seen him listed at around 250 instead of the 240 listed here.  He is generally considered to be a strong player with good athleticism.  He has not yet competed against top competition, so it is hard to say how his skills will translate to the NBA.  He is a good hustler, though, and probably the type of player that tends to stick around for a few years.  His future is probably as a thug power forward/center who gets the occasional rebound and putback. Jones played well in Portsmoth and was named to the first team (if I remember correctly).  He will probably be drafted in the second half of the second round, when teams are taking chances.  He could turn out to be a steal that low.

Interesting case.  He was overweight and often looked a bit lost on the court at Cal (Usenet draft founder Matthew Merzbacher once called him "too big to be in college"), but then he made a very smart move: transferred to USF, where Phil Matthews rode him very hard and he had one very good year.  He's got NBA size and a nice soft touch on his shot.  Will he continue to improve without a drill sargent in his ear?  Given his physical skills, some team will probably give him a shot.
