Captain William J. Longhi Collection: Naval Communication Station Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, photographs and memorabilia, 1970-1971
(Naval History and Heritage Command Photographic Lot # S-588)

This collection contains photographs and documents concerning personnel and activities of the U.S. Naval Communication Station Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam during the period 1970-1971. Although this was a period when "Vietnamization" was the aim the Vietnamese were not yet ready to assume command and operation of a communication station that contained some of the most advanced HF radio systems in the Navy inventory. NCS personnel were busy conducting three courses training Vietnamese officers and enlisted personnel in naval communications. This was in addition to providing communication support to various ships of the Seventh Fleet, CTF 115, the Naval Support Facility, the Naval Air Facility and approximately ten other commands at Cam Ranh Bay.

The collection was donated by Captain William J. Longhi, USN (Retired), who was commanding officer of NCS Cam Ranh Bay from August 1970 to June 1971. Although NCS Cam Ranh Bay was in commision from August 1967 to early 1972 the focus of this collection is the brief period (1970-1971), during Commander Longhi's command. Most of the photos are from this period while the documents provide more extensive backgound information. The station was turned over to the Vietnamese in 1972. Some U.S. contractor personnel remained at the station to assist Vietnamese personnel with some of the more complex equipment.
