    "A Fight Among the Dogs", while USS Jeannette lay icebound north of Siberia, circa early 1880. Expedition members remarked that fighting seemed to be the dogs' favorite recreation.

    Jeannette Arctic exploring expedition, 1879-1881


    Sketch by Chief Engineer George Melville, showing how USS Jeannette's ceiling timber was crushed against a reinforcing truss by the pressure of the Arctic ice, during the winter of 1879-1880. The damage was discovered in the port coal bunker on 4 March 1880 and was about 3/4 inch deep. The wood was Oregon pine.
