    Lena River Delta, Siberia


    Map based on reports of Chief Engineer George Melville, USN, who travelled extensively in the area while searching for other survivors of the Jeannette Arctic exploring expedition, during October-November 1881 and early 1882. The campsite where the expedition's leader, Lieutenant Commander George DeLong, and his men perished of starvation is near the center of the map.

    Engraved view of Chief Engineer George Melville's depot in the Lena Delta, Siberia, used during his March 1881 search for Jeannette expedition leader Lieutenant Commander George DeLong and his party. Stolbovoi is the feature in the left distance. "Monument Hill", where the remains of DeLong and his men were buried, is in the right distance.
