    "Great White Fleet" World Cruise

    December 1907 -- February 1909

    Atlantic Fleet cruisers steam in column, as they welcome the "Great White Fleet" upon its return to Hampton Roads, Virginia, at the end of its cruise around the World, 22 February 1909.
    These cruisers all wear the recently adopted grey paint.
    Ships at right and center are, in no particular order: USS North Carolina (Armored Cruiser # 12) and USS Montana (Armored Cruiser # 13).
    The three to the left are, also in no particular order: USS Chester (Scout Cruiser # 1), USS Birmingham (Scout Cruiser # 2) and USS Salem (Scout Cruiser # 3).

    Homecoming of the "Great White Fleet"

    Battleship firing salutes, during ceremonies welcoming the fleet home at the end of its World cruise.
    This ship is either USS Mississippi (Battleship # 23) or USS Idaho (Battleship # 24), neither of which participated in the cruise around the World. Note that she wears the newly-introduced grey paint, and has been fitted with a "cage" mainmast.

    Yachts and other vessels welcome the Fleet upon its arrival in Hampton roads.
    The large yacht in the right distance is USS Mayflower, which had President Theodore Roosevelt embarked. The steamer on the left, with three masts, is USS Dolphin. She carried members of Congress during the welcoming ceremonies.
