    The "Great White Fleet" transits the Suez Canal, January 1909


    Battleships of the fleet nearing Port Said, Egypt, circa 5-6 January 1909, as they approached the Mediterranean Sea during the final months of their cruise around the World.

    "Great White Fleet" World Cruise


    The Fleet's battleships steam into Hampton Roads, Virginia, upon their return to the United States at the conclusion of their voyage around the World, 22 February 1909.
    The lead ship is USS Connecticut, the Fleet's flagship. She appears to be firing salutes.
    Note the six-masted schooner in the right distance.

    "Great White Fleet" World Cruise


    The Fleet's battleships steam into Hampton Roads, Virginia, upon their return to the United States at the conclusion of their voyage around the World, 22 February 1909.
    Ship nearest the camera at left is USS Dolphin, with members of Congress embarked. That in the left center, seen stern-on, is probably USS Mayflower, with President Theodore Roosevelt on board.

    "Great White Fleet" World Cruise


    Three battleships of the Atlantic Fleet's Third Squadron steaming in column in mid-Atlantic, as they greet the "Great White Fleet" during its voyage back to the United States at the end of its World cruise, February 1909.
    These ships, wearing the recently-adopted grey paint scheme, are (from left to right:
    USS Maine (Battleship # 10), Squadron flagship;
    USS New Hampshire (Battleship # 25); and
    either USS Mississippi (Battleship # 23) or USS Idaho (Battleship #24). Note that this ship has been fitted with a "cage" mainmast.

    "Great White Fleet" World Cruise

    December 1907 -- February 1909

    Atlantic Fleet cruisers steam in column, as they welcome the "Great White Fleet" upon its return to Hampton Roads, Virginia, at the end of its cruise around the World, 22 February 1909.
    These cruisers all wear the recently adopted grey paint.
    Ships at right and center are, in no particular order: USS North Carolina (Armored Cruiser # 12) and USS Montana (Armored Cruiser # 13).
    The three to the left are, also in no particular order: USS Chester (Scout Cruiser # 1), USS Birmingham (Scout Cruiser # 2) and USS Salem (Scout Cruiser # 3).
