    First airplane landing on a warship, 18 January 1911


    Crewmen preparing the aircraft platform on USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser # 4) for Eugene B. Ely's return flight to Tanforan field, San Francisco, California, shortly after he had landed on board. His Curtiss pusher airplane is visible at the platform's forward end (center).
    Note that awnings rigged at the platform sides during the landing have now been cleared away.
