    Aviator Eugene B. Ely


    Is congratulated by an Army officer after his successful flights to and from USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser # 4), 18 January 1911. Photographed at Tanforan field, San Francisco, California.
    Note the ship's cap ribbon worn on Ely's arm, and his inner tube life preserver.

    Aviator Eugene B. Ely


    Is congratulated by U.S. Army personnel and civilians at San Francisco, California, after his return flight from USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser # 4), 18 January 1911. Earlier in the day Ely had landed on the ship, the first time an airplane alighted on a warship's deck.
    Ely is wearing a Pennsylvania cap ribbon around his left arm.

    USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser # 4)


    Guests leaving the ship after witnessing aviator Eugene B. Ely's successful landing and departure, 18 January 1911. The ship was then anchored in San Francisco Bay, California.
    Mabel (Hall) Ely, the aviator's wife, is standing a few steps above the middle platform on the embarkation ladder. She is wearing a somewhat lighter-colored coat than the other ladies near her.

    Aviator Eugene B. Ely


    Receives an award at Tanforan field, California, shortly after his 18 January 1911 flights to and from USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser # 4). The noted opera star Luisa Tetrazzini is presenting the award, as several Army officers and a Navy officer serve as honor guard. The aviator's wife, Mabel (Hall) Ely is standing to the left. Captain Charles F. Pond, Commanding Officer of the Pennsylvania is directly behind the flag staff, wearing civilian clothes.
