    Seoul, Korea


    U.S. Marines engaged in street fighting during the liberation of Seoul, circa late September 1950.
    Note M-1 rifles and Browning Automatic Rifles carried by the Marines, dead Koreans in the street, and M-4 "Sherman" tanks in the distance.

    Seoul Campaign, September 1950


    South Korean infantry and irregulars rounding up prisoners in the Seoul area, as U.S. Marine Corps M-26 tanks roll past, 26 September 1950.
    The irregulars in the right center appear to be armed with Russian Mosin-Nagant rifles.

    Liberation of Seoul, Korea, September 1950


    Senior U.S. commanders assembled for the formal ceremonies in which General of the Army Douglas MacArthur returned the Capital city to the Republic of Korea Government, 29 September 1950.
    Those present are (from left to right, facing camera):
    Major General Oliver P. Smith, USMC, Commanding General, First Marine Division;
    Major General David G. Barr, U.S. Army, Commanding General, Seventh Infantry Division;
    Brigadier General Thomas J. Cushman, USMC, commanding forward echelon, First Marine Air Wing, and

    Inchon, Korea


    A U.S. Marine stands by the front of a M-46 tank, which has three North Korean tank "kills" to its credit, on the Inchon waterfront.
    A fast transport (APD) is visible in the right background.
    This photograph is dated 13 December 1950, but was probably taken in September-October 1950, during the Inchon Invasion or the subsequent redeployment of the First Marine Division to eastern Korea.

    Navy Hospital Corpsmen


    Carry a wounded Marine from a Jeep ambulance into a First Marine Division receiving hospital in Korea.
    Photo is dated 2 October 1951. At that time the Marines were pursuing North Korean forces retreating from Seoul.

    Korean War Casualty Evacuation


    Navy Corpsmen Herald B. Williams, James E. Carr and William N. Shipworth help carry a wounded man from a U.S. Marine Corps HO3S-1 evacuation helicopter to a hospital in Korea. Helicopter is from squadron VMO-6.
    Original photo is dated 3 October 1950, in which case it was probably taken during Marine Corps operations in the vicinity of Seoul, Korea.
    Note extensive "Quonset" hut facilities in the distance.

    USS Sicily (CVE-118)


    Launches a U.S. Marine Corps OY-2 "Sentinel" spotter plane during operations in the Yellow Sea, off the west coast of Korea, 22 September 1950.
    Sicily was then supporting the campaign to recapture Seoul.
