At daylight on 26 October 1950 the First Marine Division came ashore on the Kalma Pando peninsula, near Wonsan city, welcomed by the South Korean Army and their own Air Wing. Marine fighter planes had flown into Wonsan's airfield twelve days earlier and had been conducting flight operations ever since, supported by airlifted fuel, weapons and supplies.
The division was entirely ashore by the end of October as efforts proceeded to bring Wonsan's port facilities back into operation. The Army's Seventh Infantry Division, the other part of the intended Wonsan invasion, was diverted to further up the Korean east coast to Iwon, landing there unopposed in late October and early November. The Marines, after a period of clearing operations around Wonsan, also headed north, to establish a new base at Hungnam from which to strike inland toward the Manchurian border.
This page features views of landing operations at Wonsan, beginning on 26 October 1950.
