Photo #: 80-G-45671 "Rhino" ferry (RHF) Navy "SeaBees" joining pontoon boxes together to assemble a "rhino". Photograph released on 6 June 1944, at the time of the Normandy invasion, in which "rhino" ferries played a significant role. Each "rhino" consisted of 180 pontoons attached together, six across and thirty long. The individual pontoons were welded steel boxes 5' x 7' x 5' in size.
