Steamship South America (1861-1879)
Watercolor by Erik Heyl, 1948, painted for use in his book "Early
American Steamers", Volume I.
Built at New York City in 1861 as the civilian steamship Mississippi,
she served as USS Connecticut in 1861-1865 and was renamed
South America after her return to commercial employment
in 1865.
