"Plank Owners"

Boatswain's Mate First Class Orville Cox (left) and Chief Boilerman William T. Ashford hold the "Eight" flag by the forward 5"/38 gun mount of USS Endicott (DMS-35), as she was returning to San Diego from an eight-month deployment in the Korean War Zone, circa March 1951. Both men have served on on board Endicott since she was commissioned in 1943, eight years previously, and by Navy tradition "own" a plank from the ship's deck.
In Endicott's case, however, there are no "planks", as her decks are entirely made of steel.
Probably photographed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The photograph was released by Commander Mine Force, Pacific Fleet, on 20 March 1951.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the "All Hands" collection at the Naval Historical Center.
