Photo #: NH 103952

Freighter in harbor, circa 1918-1919

Halftone reproduction of a photograph published in 1919 as one of ten images in a "Souvenir Folder" of views of and on board USS Powhatan (ID # 3013).
Though identified on the original print as a photograph of Powhatan, this steamer is actually a freighter. She may be one of the ships of the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, many of which served in the World War I era Navy as cargo ships and troop transports.
See Photo # NH 103470-KN for another USS Powhatan "Souvenir Folder". Except for the photo showing the ship, all other views in that folder are identical to those in the one from which this photograph is copied. The cover stock on this folder is orange-tan in color, whereas that of the other Powhatan folder is greenish-gray.

Donation of Dr. Mark Kulikowski, 2006.
