Action between U.S. Frigate Constitution and HMS Guerriere, 19 August 1812: "Dropping Astern"

Oil on canvas, 32" x 48", by Michel Felice Corne (1752-1845), depicting the Guerriere's main and fore masts collapsing from the effects of Constitution's fire. The dismasted British frigate surrendered, but was so badly damaged that she had to be destroyed after her crew was taken off.
Constitution was commanded by Captain Isaac Hull.

Painting in the collections of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, transferred from the Navy Department in 1869.
