George H. Bixby served on the Western Rivers during the Civil War. In June 1862, he was Assistant Surgeon in Charge of the hospital steamer Red Rover. Dr. Bixby was formally commissioned in the Navy as an Acting Assistant Surgeon in November 1862, after the transfer of the Army's Western Gunboat Flotilla to the Navy, and continued to serve in USS Red Rover into 1865. Acting Assistant Surgeon Bixby was honorably discharged from the Naval service on 26 September 1865.
