    Letter of 11 November 1920, presenting the Distinguished Service Medal to LCdr. Foster for "exceptionally meritorious service" while commanding USS L-2 (Submarine # 41) in an action with a German submarine on 10 July 1918.

    (Submarine # 41)

    U.S. National Ensign flown by L-2 during her 10 July 1918 encounter with the German submarine UB-65 off Fasnet Light, Ireland. UB-65 was sunk on this occasion.
    L-2 was commanded at that time by Lieutenant Paul F. Foster, USN.

    (middle, left to right): Mexican Campaign Medal; World War I Victory Medal (with sumbarine clasp); World War II Victory Medal; and Navy Reserve Medal. Underneath the minatures is the Atomic Energy Commission's Distinguished Service Medal.
    The medals to the right are (top, left to right): Navy Cross; Distinguished Service Medal; and Legion of Merit.
    (middle, left to right): Mexican Campaign Medal; World War I Victory Medal (with submarine clasp) and Naval Reserve Medal.
    (bottom, left to right): American Campaign Service Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; and World War II Victory Medal.
