    Korean Chief of Naval Operations visits Norfolk, Virginia


    Vice Admiral Hahm Myong Soo (left), Republic of Korea Chief of Naval Operations, receives honors on Thursday, 13 January 1966, at the headquarters of Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, USN, (center), Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
    Attending the honors ceremony were Vice Admiral Waldemar F.A. Wendt, USN, (partially hidden by Adm. Moorer's right arm), Deputy Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Major General Rathvon McC. Tompkins, USMC, (behind Adm. Moorer's left shoulder), Deputy Chief of Staff, U.S. Atlantic Command; and (at right) Commodore Kim Chun Tae, Superintendant of the Republic of Korea Naval Academy.
    Vice Admiral Hahm visited Atlantic Fleet headquarters as guest of the U.S. Navy's Chief of Naval Operations. While in the Norfolk area, VAdm. Hahm and his wife received a helicopter tour of Tidewater naval installations, demonstrations and tours of the Little Creek Amphibious Base, and a tour of the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CVA-62) at the Norfolk Naval Station. He departed Norfolk for New York City on 14 January.

    Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, USN

    With Admiral Ephraim P. Holmes on board USS Randolph (CVS-15), during change of command ceremonies at Norfolk, Virginia, 17 June 1967.
    Admiral Holmes relieved Admiral Moorer as Commander in Chief of the 230,000-man Atlantic Fleet and the unified Atlantic Command. In a separate ceremony, Holmes also took Moorer's NATO duty as Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic.
    Admiral Moorer, the first officer ever to command both the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets, goes to Washington, D.C., to take the Navy's number one job, Chief of Naval Operations. Admiral Holmes comes to the Atlantic Fleet from duty as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Program Planning.

    Admiral Moorer, the former Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic, was on an orientation tour of U.S. Navy commands in the Western Pacific.

    With his younger brother, Captain Joe P. Moorer, in their first meeting in over a year, 30 June 1967. Their paths crossed aboard the Seventh Fleet aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), operating in the Tonkin Gulf.
    Admiral Moorer, who is 55, arrived aboard the "Bonnie Dick" as a scheduled stop on his tour of military units in the Far East. Captain Moorer, 44, is the staff operations officer for Vice Admiral John J. Hyland, Seventh Fleet Commander, who arrived aboard the aircraft carrier for a Vietnam operations briefing. Both Adm. Moorer and VAdm. Hyland met with Rear Admiral Vincent P. de Poix, Commander Carrier Division Seven, whose flagship is the Bon Homme Richard.

    Accepts a gift from Commodore Heracleo J. Alano, Flag Officer in Command of the Philippine Navy, at the Cavite Naval Base, Republic of the Philippines, 5 July 1967.
    Admiral Moorer paid a courtesy call at the Cavite base, where he was briefed on its role in Philippine defense. He was then on a familiarization tour of U.S. bases in Asia, prior to relieving Admiral David McDonald as Chief of Naval Operations.
