Ensign Joseph H. Patterson, USN (1912-1939)

Joseph Hester Patterson was born in Oklahoma on 15 August 1912. After graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1936, he served for nearly two years in the heavy cruiser USS Louisville (CA-28) before receiving submarine instruction. Assigned to the new submarine USS Squalus (SS-192), he lost his life when she accidently sank on 23 May 1939. Ensign Patterson was promoted posthumously to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade).

Photograph taken 13 October 1937, while he was serving in USS Louisville (CA-28).
Ensign Patterson was lost in the accidental sinking of USS Squalus (SS-192) on 23 May 1939.
