Commander Francis A. Slattery, USN (1931-1968)

Francis Atwod Slattery was born in West Minot, Maine, on 15 September 1931. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954 and served in USS Daly (DD-519) until the end of 1955. After qualifying in submarines, Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Slattery was assigned to USS Tunny (SSG-282) in 1956-58. He attended Nuclear Power School in 1959 and thereafter served in nuclear-powered submarines and other posts related to that field. Promoted to the rank of Commander in 1967, he was Commanding Officer of USS Scorpion (SSN-589) during her 1968 Mediterranean cruise. Commander Francis A. Slattery was lost with his ship while returning from that deployment in May 1968.

USS Scorpion (SSN-589)


Comes alongside USS Tallahatchie County (AVB-2) outside Claywall Harbor, Naples, Italy, 10 April 1968.
The submarine's Commanding Officer, Commander Francis A. Slattery, is atop her sail, holding a megaphone.
Scorpion was lost with all hands in May 1968, while returning to the U.S. from this Mediterranean deployment.
