Ensign Robert W. Uhlmann, USNR, (1919-1941)

Robert W. Uhlmann was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 16 August 1919. He attended the University of Michigan's College of Engineering in 1937-40. After enlisting in the Naval Reserve in September 1940, he received training on board USS Arkansas and at the Naval Reserve Midshipman's School, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Commissioned as an Ensign in June 1941, he was assigned to duty with Patrol Squadron 24 (later redesignated Patrol Squadron 12). While serving with that unit at Naval Air Station Kanoehe Bay, Oahu, Ensign Uhlmann was killed in action during the 7 December 1941 Japanese air raid. He was subsequently cited for "prompt and efficient action and utter disregard of personal danger" during that attack.

The destroyer USS Uhlmann (DD-687), 1943-1974, was named in honor of Ensign Uhlmann.

This page features our only views related to Ensign Robert W. Uhlmann, Jr., USNR.
