Andalusia, a 944-ton (burden) wooden screw steamship, was built in 1864 at Fairhaven, Connecticut, as the commercial steamer Commodore. Purchased by the U.S. Navy upon completion in March 1864, she was placed in commission as USS Iuka in May of that year. For the rest of the Civil War she was part of the East Gulf Blockading Squadron and operated in the Gulf of Mexico off Western Florida. Among her activities were escorting a captured steamer north in October 1864, participation in an expedition to St. Mark's, Florida, in February and March 1865, and the seizure of a blockade running schooner at the end of March. In June 1865 Iuka was sent to Boston, Massachusetts, and decommissioned. Sold at the beginning of August, she was renamed Andalusia by her new civilian owners. She was employed in merchant service until destroyed by fire off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on 3 March 1867.
This page features our only view of the steamship Andalusia, which was previously USS Iuka.
