Aniwa (American Freighter, 1918).
Served as USS Aniwa (ID # 3146) in 1918-1919

Aniwa, a 6165 gross ton steam freighter, was built at Oakland, California. She was taken over by the Navy when completed in July 1918 and placed in commission as USS Aniwa (ID # 3146). Following outfitting, the ship carried a cargo of flour through the Panama Canal to New York, where she arrived in early September. In the middle of that month the ship began a voyage to Archangel, in northern Russia, to carry food for the population there. Aniwa returned to the U.S. in December 1918 and then made a trip to Genoa, Italy. Her return voyage, in March and April 1919, was immediately followed by decommissioning and return to the U.S. Shipping Board. Aniwa operated thereafter as a commercial cargo ship. She was laid up in 1923 and disposed of about 1930.

This page features all our views of the steamship Aniwa, which served as USS Aniwa (ID # 3146) in 1918-1919.
