S.S. Antilles (American Passenger-Cargo Ship, 1907)

S.S. Antilles, a 6879 gross ton (10,500 tons displacement) passenger-cargo ship, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1907. Operated commercially by the Southern Pacific Steamship Company, she was chartered by the U.S. Army in 1917 for employment as a civilian-manned transport. On 17 October 1917, while homeward bound after delivering a troops to France, Antilles was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-62. 67 lives were lost with her.

S.S. Antilles

Underway, prior to World War I.
Built by William Cramp & Son at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the Southern Pacific Company, Antilles was torpedoed and sunk on 17 October 1917, while operating as a troopship for the U.S. Army. At the time she was two days out from Quiberon Bay, France, en route to the U.S. Antilles reportedly sank in four and one-half minutes.

Sinking of S.S. Antilles, 17 October 1917


A boat load of survivors from the U.S. Army chartered transport Antilles, photographed while approaching another ship to be picked up. Their ship had been torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-62 on 17 October 1917, with the loss of 67 lives.
