Atlantis, a 60¾-foot motor boat, was built in 1911 at Greenport, Long Island, New York, for use as a pleasure craft. She was acquired by the Navy in early July 1917 and placed in commission as USS Atlantis (SP-40) late in September. For the next several months she had patrol duty in the Long Island Sound area. At the end of May 1918, Atlantis began a long voyage into the Great Lakes, by way of the Hudson River and Erie Canal. She operated for the rest of World War I in Lake Huron, returning to East Coast in November 1918, immediately after the Armistice. Following further service in the vicinity of New York City, USS Atlantis was decommissioned in May 1919. She was sold in late October of that year.
This page features our only views of the motor boat Atlantis, which served as USS Atlantis (SP-40) during World War I.
