Batjan (Dutch Freighter, 1913).
Served as USS Batjan in 1918-1919

Batjan, a 6232 gross ton freighter, was built at West Hartlepool, England, in 1913 for commercial operation under the Dutch flag. After being interned at Hampton Roads, Virginia, she was turned over to the U.S. Navy in March 1918 and placed in commission as USS Batjan (with no ID series number assigned). As a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service for the rest of World War I and the first several months following the 11 November 1918 Armistice, the ship carried ordnance and other cargo to South America and Europe. USS Batjan was decommissioned at Amsterdam in late June 1919 and returned to her owners in July.

This page features our only view of the Dutch freighter Batjan, which served as USS Batjan in 1918-1919.
