Casco, a 4594 gross ton freighter, was built in 1910 at Flensburg, Germany, as the German merchant steamship Elmshorn. She was seized when the United States entered World War I and in January 1918 was turned over to the Navy. Placed in commission as USS Casco (ID # 1957) at that time, during the next fourteen months she was assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service and carried cargo from the U.S. to Europe. The ship was decommissioned in March 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board.
This page features the only view we have concerning the steamship Casco, which served as USS Casco (ID # 1957) in 1918-1919.
