S.S. Celebes (Dutch Freighter, 1907).
Served as USS Celebes (ID # 2680) in 1918-1919

Celebes, a 5875 gross ton freighter, was built in 1907 by Furness, Withy & Company at West Hartlepool, England. She was commercially employed under the flag of The Netherlands until March 1918, when the U.S. Government seized her at Newport News, Virginia. Soon transferred to the U.S. Navy, she was placed in commission as USS Celebes in April and assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service. During the rest of World War I and the three months following the 11 November 1918 Armistice, the ship operated between New York and ports in western France. In March 1919 Celebes began her final Navy voyage, from New York to Amsterdam, and early in May was decommissioned and returned to her Dutch owners.

This page features the only view we have concerning the Dutch freighter Celebes, which served as USS Celebes (ID # 2680) in 1918-1919.
