Dauntless, a fast (30 knot) 45-foot motor pleasure boat, was built in about 1917 by W. Frank Harrison of Essex, Connecticut. Described on her official data card as a "new well built vessel ... suitable for gov't use as scout patrol in conn. with aeroplane work", she was acquired by the Navy under lease in September 1917 and placed in commission at the beginning of the next month as USS Dauntless (SP-1002). She was employed in southern New England waters for the rest of World War I, and for some months following the November 1918 Armistice. Dauntless was returned to her owner, R.T.H. Barnes, in May 1919.
This page features the only view we have concerning the motor boat Dauntless, which was USS Dauntless (SP-1002) in 1917-1919.
