Dawn (American Yawl, 1916)

Dawn, a 50' 2" yawl-rigged pleasure boat with an auxiliary gasoline engine, was built in 1916 at East Booth Bay, Maine, by the F.C. Adams Shipbuilding Company. In May 1917 her owner, Franklin Farrel Jr. of New Haven, Connecticut, was ordered to deliver her to the Navy. Intended for World War I patrol service, Dawn was assigned the Navy registry number SP-37. However, the lease agreement covering her acquisition was cancelled in June, and she was returned to Mr. Farrel in December 1917.

This page features the only view we have concerning the yawl Dawn of 1916.

Dawn
(American Yawl, 1916)

Under sail in northeastern U.S. waters, circa 1916-1917.
This pleasure craft, owned by Franklin Farrel Jr., of Ansonia, Connecticut, was ordered to be delivered to the Navy by letter of 14 May 1917. Assigned the registry # SP-37, she was apparently unsuitable for Naval purposes as the lease agreement covering her was cancelled on 7 June 1917. Dawn was returned to her owner on 18 December 1917.
