Derrick Barge # 70 (American Barge, 1914).
Became U.S. Navy Floating Derrick # 37 (ID # 2635) in 1918 and later served as YD-37 and YF-196

Derrick Barge # 70, a 360 gross ton (1188 tons displacement) barge with an 82 foot steel boom for lifting loads, was built in 1914 at New Brighton, New York, for commercial use. Owned by McAllister Brothers of New York City, she was inspected for possible Naval service in mid-April 1918 and assigned the Identification Number 2635. Her acquisition was authorized in July of that year, and she subsequently became the Navy's Floating Derrick # 37. Renamed YD-37 in 1920 and YF-196 in 1924, she was employed by the Third Naval District in the New York Harbor area for her entire U.S. Navy career. YF-196 was sold in April 1931.

This page features the only view we have concerning the harbor craft Derrick Barge # 70, which became U.S. Navy Floating Derrick # 37 (ID # 2635) in 1918 and later served as YD-37 and YF-196.
