-- CIVILIAN SHIPS --

Davis K. Philips (American Fishing Vessel, 1877).
Served as Davis K. Philips (SP-978) in 1917-1919.
Possibly called David K. Philips

Davis K. Philips, a 116 gross ton steam-powered menhaden fishing vessel, was built at Damariscotta, Maine, in 1877. Though described on her official data card as "40 yrs old and below require speed", she was acquired by the Navy from Bellows & Squires of Ocran, Virginia, and placed in commission as USS Davis K. Philips (SP-978) in May 1917. During the rest of World War I, and perhaps for some months after the November 1918 Armistice, the ship was employed in the vicinity of Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay as a harbor tug and on anti-submarine net patrol duties. Davis K. Philips was sold in June 1919.

Note: Volume II of the "Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships" lists this ship's name as David K. Philips. However, her official data card calls her Davis K. Philips.

This page features the only view we have concerning the fishing vessel Davis K. Philips, which was USS Davis K. Philips (SP-978) in 1917-1919.

Though described on her official data card as "40 yrs old and below required speed", this fishing vessel was placed in commission as USS Davis K. Philips (SP-978) on 21 May 1917. She was sold on 23 June 1919.
Note: The "Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships" gives her name as David K. Philips, though her data card lists her as Davis K. Philips.
