Governor R.M. McLane (Maryland Oyster Police Steamer, 1871).
Served in 1917-1918 as USS Governor R.M. McLane (SP-1328 & ID # 1328)

Governor R.M. McLane, a 144-ton steamer belonging to the Maryland State Conservation Commission, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1884. She was acquired by the Navy for World War I service in early August 1917 and placed in commission as USS Governor R.M. McLane (SP-1328 -- also listed as ID # 1328). During the next sixteen months she performed patrol and towing duties on Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The vessel was returned to her owners at the end of November 1918.

This page features the only view we have concerning the Maryland Oyster Police steamer Governor R.M. McLane, which served as USS Governor R.M. McLane in 1917-1918.

Governor R.M. McLane
(Maryland Oyster Police Steamer, 1884)

Photographed prior to World War I.
Commissioned on 6 August 1917, she served as USS Governor R.M. McLane (ID # 1328) during World War I. She was returned to her owner, the Conservation Commission of Baltimore, on 30 November 1918.

George H. Bradley
(American "Menhaden Fisherman" type trawler, 1871)

In port, prior to World War I.
This fishing vessel was acquired by the Navy for World War I service and placed in commission on 18 May 1917 as USS George H. Bradley (SP-327). She was sold on 6 May 1919.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
