S.S. Isabela (American Freighter, 1911)
Served as USS Isabela in 1918-1919.

Isabela, a 3063 gross ton (7030 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1911. She was commissioned at New York in April 1918 as USS Isabela (no ID # was assigned). The ship sailed from New York in April with a fast convoy for Nantes but was unable to keep up and joined a slow convoy for Brest at Halifax at the end of April. Because of port congestion the freighter was sent from Brest to Rochefort in May to unload her cargo. In June Isabela departed New York with a convoy for Brest and once again unloaded at Rochefort. She delivered a third cargo to Rochefort in September and then carried an Army shipment to Le Havre in December, returning to Baltimore, Maryland, in January 1919. USS Isabela was decommissioned in February 1919 and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owners, the New York and Puerto Rico Steamship Company. On 19 May 1942, while steaming in the Caribbean en route from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico, S.S. Isabela was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-751. Three members of her crew were lost with her.

This page features the only view we have concerning the American freighter Isabela, which was USS Isabela in 1918-1919.
