Keystone State (Steamship, 1853-1879);
Later USS Keystone State (1861-1865) and civilian steamship San Francisco

Keystone State, a 1364-ton side wheel steamer, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1853. She was employed in passenger and cargo service until 1861, when she was acquired by the U.S. Navy and became USS Keystone State. Following extensive Civil War operations the Navy sold her in September 1865. Soon thereafter, she was renamed San Francisco and began a second civilian career that lasted until 1879.

This page features our only view of the steamer Keystone State, which was USS Keystone State during 1861-65.

For pictures of this ship during her U.S. Navy service, see:

  • USS Keystone State (1861-1865).
