Knickerbocker, a 123 gross ton steam harbor tug, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1873 and rebuilt in 1904. Leased by the Navy in May 1917, she was later purchased outright and placed in commission in September of that year as USS Knickerbocker (SP-479). Thereafter, the tug was assigned to minesweeping, towing and dispatch duties in the New York Harbor area. Her disposal was ordered in March 1918, but this was rescinded a month later as a shortage of tugs required that she remain in service. USS Knickerbocker was sold in February 1919.
This page features our only views of the harbor tug Knickerbocker, which was USS Knickerbocker (SP-479) in 1917-1919.
