S.S. Lake Forest (American Freighter, 1917)
Originally built as S.S. War Fox.
Served as USS Lake Forest (ID # 2991) in 1918-1919.
Later S.S. Venetier, Tabakhandel, Este, Chollin, Rafael Aritzia, San Patricio, Mary V. and Kadio S.

S.S. War Fox, a 1948 gross ton (4100 tons displacement) freighter, was completed at Wyandotte, Michigan, in November 1917. Ordered by the British and requisitioned in August 1917 by the U. S. Shipping Board, the ship was renamed Lake Forest around the time of her completion. She was commissioned in the Navy at New York in January 1918 as USS Lake Forest (ID # 2991). Between January and April the ship carried coal from Norfolk, Virginia, to Boston, Massachusetts, and to Bermuda. In May she loaded another cargo of coal and sailed for the Clyde in Scotland, where she arrived in June. Lake Forest fought off an attacking submarine during her return voyage in late June. In July and August she took a cargo of mines to the Clyde. In late October the freighter sailed from Norfolk with a shipment of relief supplies for the Red Cross Commission on the island of Maderia, where there was a serious food shortage. Returning to New York at the end of December with a commercial cargo, Lake Forest carried coal to Melville, Rhode Island and Guantanamo, Cuba, from where she returned to New York with a cargo of sugar. USS Lake Forest was decommissioned at Norfolk in March 1919 and returned to the Shipping Board. During her long post-World War I commercial service she was renamed Venetier in 1920, Tabakhandel in 1925, Este in 1926, Chollin in 1937, Rafael Aritzia in 1948, San Patricio in 1956, Mary V. in 1957, and Kadio S. later in 1957. She was scrapped in Spain in 1960.

This page features the only views we have concerning the American freighter Lake Forest, USS Lake Forest (ID # 2991), and S.S. Venetier, Tabakhandel, Este, Chollin, Rafael Aritzia, San Patricio, Mary V., and Kadio S.
