Lykens, a 625 gross ton steam tug, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1899 for civilian use. The Navy purchased her in September 1917 and placed her in commission as USS Lykens (SP-876) in November of that year. During World War I, she operated in the Atlantic, reaching as far out as Bermuda and the Azores, and continued service along the mid-Atlantic coast following the end of the conflict. Decommissioned in March 1920, Lykens returned to active service with the hull number AT-56 in mid-year. She was employed in the New York City area until December 1922, then was placed out of commission. USS Lykens was kept in reserve until sold in February 1934.
This page features our only views of the tug Lykens, which served as USS Lykens in 1917-1934.
